Why a cool room helps
Falling asleep is a thermal event. Before you drift off, the blood vessels in your hands and feet dilate, your body sheds heat, and your core temperature drops. That heat loss at the extremities is the single best physiological predictor of how quickly someone falls asleep. (Kräuchi et al., Nature, 1999)
A cool room supports that process. Heat works against it. Reviews of the thermal environment and sleep consistently find that heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep, while a cool room lets the body do what it is already trying to do. (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, Journal of Physiological Anthropology, 2012)

Where our name comes from
18.3°C is 65°F. It is the temperature most widely recommended as ideal for sleep, and it sits at the centre of the range sleep organisations point to, roughly 15°C to 20°C.
We took it as our name because it captures the thing most people overlook. Sleep is an environment problem before it is a willpower problem. You cannot discipline your way into deep sleep in a warm room. Set the room right and everything else gets easier.
What your nose is doing
Your nose conditions every breath, and it does something less obvious too. The paranasal sinuses produce nitric oxide continuously, and nasal breathing carries it down into the lungs, where it lowers pulmonary vascular resistance and improves how well airflow and blood flow match up. Breathe through your mouth and you skip that entirely. (Lundberg et al., Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1996)
Why lying down makes it harder
Nasal airflow gets harder the moment you lie down. Moving from sitting to supine raises jugular venous pressure, the vessels lining the nasal passages engorge, and nasal resistance rises. Turn onto your side and the down-side nostril narrows further while the up-side one opens. (Eccles, Rhinology, 1986)
That matters because the nose already accounts for up to half of your total airway resistance. (Young et al., Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1997) A small change in nasal airflow is a large change in how easy breathing feels.
Modern life works against all of it
Light late at night, noise, stress and stimulants all fragment sleep. Caffeine is the one people underestimate. In a controlled trial, 400mg taken six hours before bed cut objectively measured sleep by more than an hour, and participants largely didn't notice. (Drake et al., Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2013)
